Calgary Flames: Five things we learned about the Flames after their win over the Oilers

The Calgary Flames want to see a side of themselves that they haven’t shown in a long time.
Looking to snap a five-game losing streak, the Flames played a solid, hard-working game in a 4-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Oct. 2.
The result was a positive step forward for a team that has struggled to find consistency, particularly on home ice, over the past two seasons.
“We played a real good game,” said defenceman Mark Giordano. “We were very patient. We blocked shots. We took away the neutral zone time. We played the game the right way.”
And they’re learning.
“I think maybe this was a bit of a wake-up call for us,” said Giordano. “We’ve had a lot of adversity in this organization. We’ve had a lot of losing lately and losing a lot of guys and losing a lot of games.
“So I think maybe now we’re going to see a different side of ourselves.”

1. The Flames are a different team
Few teams have provided a more complete 180-degree turn in the last two years than the Flames.
A rebuilding team that went through a coaching change and a number of roster moves last summer and into the regular season is now a team that is competing for a playoff spot and has some solid young pieces.
“We’re playing a whole different team and we’re playing a whole different style,” said centre Jiri Hudler. “We’re playing a bit more methodical. We’re not jumping into everything.”
Though it’s now late October, the Flames (41-29-9) still feel a lot like the team that went 3-9-2 in its first 10 games last season.
