Once the developer had access to your audio, they read out a 128-bit MAC address. This is the same data used to authenticate the Wi-Fi connection on your phone or tablet. If the attacker can sniff the connection, it’s game over. The result? The hackers treated your other devices as if they were a rogue network of sorts, essentially untethered from the infrastructure.
We first discovered this bug in 2016, but at the time it didn’t seem particularly concerning to us as the term “Rogue Access Point” only really had a foothold in popular culture. The problem was that it was primarily used against people doing things like unpairing Bluetooth devices from their PCs, or resetting their password. Although we were concerned that this attack could be used in the context of law enforcement, we found that the question mostly stopped there. It seemed that there was a lot of research needed, and policy work required, to make this a genuine concern for end users.
We decided to ignore our develop-er’s choice of words for a moment, and instead of simply using this opportunity to launch on stage and show everyone the keynote demo, we decided to take a proactive approach to exposing it. Because this security issue does not fundamentally impact our systems as a company, but rather how users interact with their devices. On top of all that, we also wanted to give you a meaningful head start as we started the official documentation process. We wanted to shine the spotlight on the issue, and within a few months, had the issue just as high in the awareness of our own executive team as it currently is today.
Based on our over a year of research, we were easily able to surmise that, on a large scale, there were a combined total of around 4,500 rogue access points in the US alone. In what we’re calling the deterrent efforts of 2.2 billion. We think we can do better and have reached out to researchers, law enforcement agencies, and a number of academic institutions, to develop a real-world testing program that we can use to confirm the extent of the problem. d2c66b5586
