Quantile is in the same letters as that of median and quartile. All three statistics are unusual in that rarely do we decide what final answer mark we want. The three are measurements of how spread - or, rather, uneven spread - the data is, or, more concisely, how spread the splits of the data are and whether the data lies more to the right or to the left of the central mark. Most marks and grades in exams have a normal distribution - most marks or grades will fall between two given marks or grades, usually the medians.
The three statistics are useful for telling us not only the accuracy of the three marks and grades in the exam, but also for telling us more about the quality of the data. If all marks and grades in an exam fit a normal distribution, then the median is the best mark (or grade). The median is more reflective of the quality of the exam than the mean. A normal distribution in an exam implies that most marks are the same as the median, and hence the values around the median are of more value than the values near the extremes.
So the mean of our distribution is 7. How many data points are in each interval? There are 4 data points between – 5 and 10 and 5 data points between 10 and 20. This leaves intervals –25 to –5 and +15 to +30. d2c66b5586
