Gwenview Needs A New maintainer

version numbering: i kept the current versioning system temporarily. - Have limited time to do anything at the moment, so testing compatibility with aur repo's with existing packages is not currently a option. There is also the issue with version-bashing with extra/gwenview. pacman doesnt always treat the entire version string correctly and will replace gwenview-git with gwenview in rare occasions when the sub-version updates but the package is not altered to reflect this. (Ex: gwenview:20.04.2-1 gwenview-git:v20.03.80.r31.g5f85b6ca gwenview is newer) - This is a big issue since i cant update the subversion at each minor version change upstream. Git is continous, while the arch rolling-release-version. Versioning system from arch will always be ahead as there is no automated way to increment the versioning system without scripting a check for the version arch currently has listed.
Reading repository package databases...Resolving AUR dependencies...:: error: Can't resolve dependencies for AUR package 'gwenview-git'::: error: Dependencies missing for gwenview-git:: warning: Following package cannot be found in AUR: kactivities-frameworks
And the Rocket.chat app Ruqola passed kdereview and was moved to be ready to release. However the word from the maintainer Laurent Montel is that a rewrite with Qt Widgets is planned so there's still a lot of work to be done.
Don't forget that dbus needs to be started as the local user (not with sudo) before any KDE programs will launch. To start it run the following command: launchctl load -w /Library/LaunchAgents/org.freedesktop.dbus-session.plist
It has also been eight years that the same initramfs creation tool has been used (Mkinitcpio), but with Dracut being the more widely used and constantly maintained, it is time to move to this new tool for KaOS. For almost two years Mkinitcpio did not have a maintainer and upstream had talks about abandoning this tool. This will be a major change and will require lots of work for the ISO creation, but a start has been made, the linux-next kernel already defaults to Dracut for initramfs creation.
The tool to manage, search, and install KaOS Community Packages, kcp has been completely rewritten (still in Go) in order to support the main new feature: the configuration. Now, you can adapt kcp/pckcp to your needs in editing the configuration files (located in $HOME/.config/kcp/ directory). Notable options :
The Foundation also engages Eirik Eng and Haavard Nord, the founders of Trolltech, the company that started developing Qt back in the 90s. Eirik and Haavard are board advisers but do not have voting rights. The Foundation also has two lawyers on retainer for legal counsel. They ensure that the agreement between KDE and the owners of the Qt suite of frameworks, libraries and utilities is legally binding.
Finally, VDG member Noah Davis dug deep into Breeze to work on visual consistency improvements related to selection highlights. Given his familiarity with the code, he was well on his way to becoming the next Breeze maintainer!
On the second day, the participating developers formed smaller groups to test the adoption of each of these solutions to our needs. Most of the work went into using each tool to build a working prototype that would help with getting started with coding a KDE application on it. A small and simple KDE application (Kruler) with not many dependencies was chosen for this purpose.
Flatpak is a utility for building and deploying software and managing packages on Linux-based operating systems. Aleix Pol had put the time towards supporting this technology in KDevelop, but there was still work left to be done. Together with Albert Astals Cid and David Redondo, they worked on testing the status of this implementation and recorded the pending challenges which we had to address if we wanted to bring this solution to a state that would serve our needs.
We decided to run a competition on all social networks for which we had a maintainer (Instagram, Twitter, Mastodon, and Reddit). We thought we would always be able to extend this later to other places. Each maintainer can propose two images + attribution info + links, which will be shown in rotation for a month. We planned that the system for doing this would be ready for the 4.3 release in October.
We discussed how Qt6 will be an improved version of Qt5, as it will be a big refactor that makes the API quite better and solve some architectural problems in Qt5 areas including QGuiAction. To have that, it needs to be binary incompatible with Qt5.
During the talk, I found myself saying \"what Molly said\" a lot, since the reasons to adopt GitLab and the experience GNOME had lived through were essentially the same to what KDE itself was going through at the time. She mentioned how the old framework had become somewhat unwieldy, how GitLab offered an integrated interface with many of the services contributors required, and how a customized platform, although tailor-made to suit many developers needs, was a barrier to many newcomers, something that GitLab was not. Tick, tick, tick.
We now have monthly app update stories which show what has been released in the last month. Importantly these also say how you can get the apps, pointing at the app stores where you can find our software. We want to be proud to have our stuff available through Microsoft's store. We also want to be prominent on the competition to Microsoft's Store, so you'll also find KDE apps on Chocolatey for Windows. The same goes for Android where we are on the popular Google Play store and the more Open Source friendly F-Droid. As Linux users start to move to container formats we want to be there too, so we are on the Flatpak Hub Flathub, the Snap store Snapcraft and Appimagehub too.
Finally, as each application project has different needs and resources, project maintainers decided to change the quarterly releases to monthly updates. This relieves stress off of developers, as they can skip a month if they are not ready to publish a new version of their software at the time of the release. Without hard deadlines, developers are under no obligation to push out software they are not entirely happy with, being able to concentrate on providing high quality tools that allow you to take control over your digital life and enjoy your freedom and privacy.
HEIF plug-in is included in kimageformats package but package maintainer has to explicitly enable it (use cmake with -DKIMAGEFORMATS_HEIF=ON). Otherwise the plug-in will not be built/installed (check if you have kimg_heif.so).
Here you'll find a lot of \"why and how\" about media-libs/xine-lib and related packages like media-video/xine-ui, media-video/gxine and so on. Hopefully, this guide will be updated during the time, also when maintainer changes.
Since version 1.1.2 the patchset is heavily reduced, also because the former maintainer (Pettenò Diego Pettenò) is now contributing directly to xine project . For this reason, while he's present, it's a good idea to pass through him for patches that are needed.
As media-libs/xine-lib uses a number of libraries that are synced from time to time with its source tree, the patches that changes files imported from other projects are usually not accepted by media-libs/xine-lib's upstream and needs to be sent to the originating project. The main examples are ffmpeg and vidix , but also dvdnav . In those cases, if the patch is applied upstream, it might be usefult to ask for a sync of the sources to xine's developers.
media-video/gxine is a frontend based on GTK2 toolkit, it has fewer optional dependencies than media-video/xine-ui so it's usually simpler to manage. Although it had a few security vulnerabilities in the past, the new code should be safer. Patches to this can be sent to xine's tracker as usual or to the upstream maintainer, Darren Salt. As per xine-lib, the patches are welcome as Mercurial commits exports.
anyone previously working with slackware hereI just don't get it, in slackware the kde packages had more less 160mb not counting qt and here pacman -S kde gives somethig like 212mb and what is interesting are the dependencies like xine-lib, jack-audio-connection-kit, mdnsresponder (what the hell is that), libksba, gnokii...well I know that it's very nice of package maintainers to provide us with packages which are up to date and 'stable', however it would also be nice to think about dependencies. how many of you use jack or.. libksba (never heard of that either)what I want to say is that there are lots of useless software which are said to be required (but they are not), it would be better if package mainaters would rather provide PKGBUILDs so that everyone could build their own packages and add this jack-sh**
