The social media use of celebrities has prompted some to ponder whether it adversely affects their professional brand.[202] In 2009 and 2010, CEO of Nike, Mark Parker, studied the use of Twitter and other social media by marketing executives and provided advice to marketers on how to manage their brands and reputations.[203] Former advertising executive Jeffrey Moore, who has studied the relationship between celebrity and brand, suggested that a celebrity endorsement may come with a variety of costs, including the celebrity's failing to promote the product or service for which they were initially hired, and that these costs could not be fully offset by any benefits.[204] In 2018, the University of Oxford, the MIT Sloan School of Management, and the University of Pennsylvania published a paper that performed a systematic review of the studies of celebrity advertising, and found that those that examined the use of celebrities in marketing had mixed effects.[205] The first systematic review of the effect of celebrity advertising on consumer behavior was published in 2010.[206]
In the early 1980s, businesses were encouraged to use social media and new technology to learn about their customers.[207] The practice has been criticized by many on the grounds that consumers may be misled into thinking they are providing opinions to the company when they are not.[208] The value of social media in the modern era is considered by many to be a function of the way people exchange information.[209] In July 2013, a study in the New York Times claimed that the rapid growth of Facebook had distorted the marketplace, and that employers could manipulate the marketplace using the networking features of the service. The study was based on a survey of 100 employers by the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development. The survey found that 70% of employers used social media networking in their hiring and 68% of employers used social media networking to help connect with applicants.[210] The study also found that the majority of employers surveyed received applicants through social media channels, and that employers were looking to hire applicants through social media channels because it was easier, faster, and less expensive than directly contacting potential hires.[211]
