It can also be helpful to view the FLEXlm log file, lmlog.txt, in the $MATLAB\flexlm directory. To get more information about a FLEXlm license manager problem, see the FLEXlm End User Manual, available in PDF format in $MATLAB\flexlm\enduser.pdf or go to the GLOBEtrotter Software, Inc. Web site, www.globetrotter.com.
Check the expiration date on each of the INCREMENT lines in your License File. If the dates in the license file have already passed, contact the Customer Service department at The MathWorks (through the Web or through e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org). When contacting The Mathworks, include your License Number and the Host ID of your license server.
You can also get this error if the space character between the number of users field and the 20 digit encryption code in the INCREMENT line is missing. Compare the INCREMENT lines in your license file with the INCREMENT lines in your original license e-mail. They must be exactly the same.
License Manager Error -14: Cannot Find SERVER Hostname in Network DatabaseIf this error occurs on a client system, check to make sure that the hostname on the SERVER line in the license.dat file on your client system matches the hostname on the SERVER line in your license.dat file on your license server. Edit the SERVER line in the client license.dat file, if necessary.
License Manager Error -25: License Server Does Not Support This Version of This FeatureThis error indicates that you are trying to run MATLAB 6.5 with an old license. You must update your license.dat file with your new license passcodes.
License Manager Error -83: FLEXlm Version of Client Newer Than ServerThis error message usually indicates that the version of the license manager on the client system is newer than the license manager on the server system. When MATLAB starts, the license file is pointing to the wrong version of the license manager.
To correct the problem, change the path of the DAEMON line in your license.dat file. For a UNIX server, the DAEMON line for all license files should resemble this sample (the pathname of your daemon will be different).
Use this procedure when the computer you want to install MathWorks® products on does not have an Internet connection. However, you need an Internet connection to the get the File Installation Key and license file, and to download the installer.
Activate and obtain your license file and get the file installation key using the License Center. If you are using an organizational license, get the files from your administrator. If you are using a trial license, go to
Go to the Install and Activate tab. If you have not activated a computer for this license yet, click Activate to activate the license, download the license file, and get the file installation key.
Get the product installer and product files using the procedure in Download Products Without Installing. Make sure you follow step 6 for moving the installation files along with the license file and file installation key to the target computer.
If you get a message saying that the key is invalid for the release you are trying to install, see your administrator or go to the License Center to get the files for the File Installation Key you have. If you are using a trial license, go to
This got rid of the error, but I still have a problem launching Matlab. Each time I launch it (by typing "matlab" in terminal), the Mathworks software activation window pops up. I provide the path to the licence file, it appears to activate successfully (no errors), but then Matlab doesn't launch. If I try to run it again, the same thing happens.
Way too old thread but viewed 4523 times and active 16 days ago so still relevant I guess. Here is how you solve it. In my case the folder "~/.matlab/R2015a_licenses/" did not exist. though "~/.matlab" did. So I created R2015a_licenses. Now the problem is this folder was accessible only to root. So the activation application could not write the required file. So change the permission of this folder using "sudo chmod 777 R2015a_licenses". Now run matlab normally(no sudo). It should take you to the activation client. otherwise run the activation client manually(no sudo), it is called "activate_matlab.sh" in the bin folder. follow the steps and let it detect the user-name and do not change it. when it exits without error you are done with the licence part. Now there could be another problem that your matlab freezes just after the opening window and doesn't go any further. Take a look at this. "Go to the ".matlab/" directory in the users home directory. Rename the directory named after the version of MATLAB you are using to have _old at the end. If there is a folder with "_licenses" in the name, DO NOT rename that folder" kind of worked. By kind of I mean matlab complained that it cant write preferences in "~/.matlab". So I changed the permission for that folder by "chmod" and then it worked.

Just to be clear, if I specify the lmgrd port in the license file - I still need to open TCP ports 27000-27009 in the firewall? I have other flexlm licenses already being served on ports 27000 - 27004 and 27006
Ok thanks guys. I guess I'm just wondering why it needs to have all of those ports open even while specifying a port in the license file. We don't have any redundant Autodesk license managers so i'm not really worried about that but it makes it difficult to run other flexlm products on defined flexlm ports and still lock down firewall rules. 2b1af7f3a8
