The concept of the album is based on the band's own desire to create an album that was an escape for their fans. The goal was to produce an album that was distinct from the band's live performances, so that people would hear new songs and want to see them live. Themed around this concept, the album is not a concept album, but rather a collection of songs based on what the band wanted to write about that particular time. The band recorded the album in a church in North London, in a village called Chipstead. As the band were recording, discussions on how to describe the band's music and themes were going on. The name of the band was mentioned once again, and it was suggested that they should call themselves the “faux melodic metallers”. They liked the name and went with it.
The record opens with a serene track called “Oats”, which is a track featuring a bit of reggae. It has a very relaxing sound, and has a powerful beat. This is the first track that the band wrote, and it was originally going to be on their debut album. The band had difficulty writing the song, but eventually decided to write it for the album. According to bassist Joe Hewitt, the band wanted to write a song that was short and simple, but with a good hook, and they decided that “Oats” was the best song that they had written. The song, along with the rest of the album, was produced by Don Gilmore. The album also includes a track called “Tinderbox”, which is a track that was written specifically for the release of the album, and is a slight departure from what the band usually write. The song has a slightly darker sound, and is a major departure from the band's usual sound. The track “Faces” was also written for the album, and is a track that lyrically explains why the band chose to call themselves the “faux melodic metallers”, because they wanted to create something that was more than just a typical metal band. “Faces” was originally performed by the band in their live show, so the band felt confident that they could record and record a song that they felt was up to par with their live performances. They had previously decided to record the song in a church, and they were very pleased with the end result.
