What makes the extra point so much better than the typical point-after attempt is that it is nearly impossible to defend with the extra cushion that is typically given to the kicking team. In theory, the kicking team has almost a minute to line up and snap the ball, run to the near end zone and kick the extra point, which then gives the kicking team a new set of downs with a field goal attempt at the end of the two-minute warning. It is almost as if a two-minute warning is included in the play, and it has even earned its own hashtag (# ExtraPointAlert) for the rare opportunity it offers.
But the NFL didn’t just single out the extra point as a game-changer; the players and coaches that coach those teams that punt or kick it have earned two Super Bowl rings since 2012, when a rule was changed to expand the clock when an extra point is scored after the two-minute warning.
That all changed in 2014, when the league finally moved the extra point to the 15-yard line instead of the 2-yard line. Now, the kick can start anywhere between a teammate holding the ball or the ball being snapped from center-field. For many teams, the extra point has changed the way they play, but more than that it has changed the way coaches talk about their kicking game.
“It’s interesting,” said Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, via the Dallas Morning News. “Our kicking game has just flourished since we changed it. They have just been phenomenal. We’ve beaten Detroit two or three years now. We just did it the other night against Baltimore. We’ve beaten New Orleans a couple of years ago, and we still have a young quarterback on a great team that can be extraordinarily efficient at it.
“So, you have to give credit to the coaches because they’ve done a tremendous job developing that kicker. I will say this: It’s a better feeling 0b46394aab
