The Lover (French: L'Amant) is a 1992 romantic drama film produced by Claude Berri and directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud. Based on the semi-autobiographical 1984 novel of the same name by Marguerite Duras, the film details the illicit affair between a teenage French girl and a wealthy Chinese man in 1929 French Indochina. The protagonist is portrayed by actress Jane March and her lover is portrayed by actor Tony Leung Ka-fai. The film also features Jeanne Moreau as a narrator.
Life goes on outside the walls of this cocoon. The girl hates her life - hates the bloody-mindedness of her teachers and fellow students, and the descent of her dysfunctional family into depravity. Of the man we learn less; he comes from a proud old family, and his bride will be selected for him according to the ancient ways. The secret love affair is of course forbidden by the mores of the time; both races hold strong feelings against interracial romance. But the movie treats those attitudes less with indignation than with relief; because society prevents these two lovers from being seen together in public, the movie doesn't have to deal with their roles in society. Like classic pornography, it can isolate them in a room, in a bed: They are bodies that have come together for our reveries.

The Lover (1992) takes place in French colonial Vietnam, which is a far cry from the jungles of the typical war epic. Jane March plays a thirteen-year-old girl who, on her way to boarding school, is waylaid (well, just plain laid) by an older, wealthy Chinese businessman. Yeah, he gives her the business . . . any which way and loose! Jane exposes her supple wares--high-rise ass, firm tits, and moist, dewy muff. She goes that extra mile for authenticity in sex scenes that appear explicit, at least to Mr. Skin's trained eyes. Lisa Faulkner adds some more boob, including a DVD extra flash, but it's Jane who Marches this flick into the hall of fame. You've got to love The Lover. If you're looking for specifics on Faulkners flesh, you can fast forward to the 20-minute mark when Lisa flasher her right funbag multiple times during an audition. This shot is present in the Japanese version only. At the 26-minute mark, her gorgeous buns can be seen undulating through an infirmary. It's a tad dark, but still pretty nice! Jane March gives us the best scenes to masturbated to, as she shows breasts, butt, and bush as she's carried to bed by Tony Ka Fai. About ten minutes later you can see her tits and bush again while she lay in bed. It's a long 49 seconds but very dark. Around then she starts to paw at her own box until she comes. The Lover will make you want to love yourself for sure!
THE CRYING GAME - Sexual and political ambiguity are key metaphors in Neil Jordan's tale of an Irish terrorist who becomes emotionally involved with the lover of a man he once held hostage. Parts of the film are flatly directed, and its use of offbeat sexuality will put it off-limits for many moviegoers. It certainly keeps the audience guessing, though, and few movies explode so many stereotypes. (Rated R) HUGH HEFNER: ONCE UPON A TIME - The life and times of Playboy magazine and its founder. This documentary sheds some light on American social history of the past few decades, but its view of Hefner and his machinations is too sentimental to take very seriously. (Not rated) LORENZO'S OIL - When their child is diagnosed as fatally ill, his parents are soon disillusioned by the procedures and protocols recommended by doctors; so they embark on research motivated by their own compassion, eventually finding new hope in an oil extract that's more a food than a medication. Based on real events, George Miller's drama takes a provocative stand by suggesting that family love has powers undreamed of by the medical establishment. The story seems tied down by its docudrama framework, thou gh, and some scenes of illness and suffering are almost unbearable to watch. (Rated PG-13)
