How the refs will call the game, in what ways the game will be different.
For example, I work for a sporting goods company and we just released an updated version of our top seller for our youth football league. It's called the CornerOff-Grid. Players can use it to shoot high energy, low energy, and even deflections. This release was preceded by a review of all the rules and regulations for the game. We didn't take the time to change a rule, we looked at everything in the rulebook and said, let's streamline it and let's make it easier to understand and easier to play.
So if a major professional sport wants to change the rules, it doesn't hurt to look at how the game is played in a more user-friendly way. It doesn't have to be about changing how it would be played, but, instead, about what it will be like to play.
The Bigger Picture
But we are talking about the marketing.

Here is an example of a sports franchise that changed the rules in a way that sold more products than it would have, without being bad for the game.
